Discover Pau

Famed for being the birthplace of Henri de Bourbon in 1553, Pau has always celebrated the historical figure who went on to become King Henri IV of France. The Château de Pau, sitting proudly above the city below and the River Gave, bears witness to this. Discover not only the past of the man who became king, but also works of art and paintings tracing more than 1,000 years of history. The castle also has magnificent gardens that are not to be missed. Also unmissable in Pau, the churches of Saint Jacques and Saint Martin are definitely worth a visit. The same goes for the Museum of Fine Arts, where you can marvel at works by the likes of Degas and Rubens… Pau also has a museum of paratroopers. Open free of charge all year, it retraces more than 100 years of parachuting history. And why not take the funicular to the famous Boulevard des Pyrénées? The 3-minute ride in small cabins will entertain young and old alike and allow you to take a short break before strolling along the 1.2-mile thoroughfare offering breathtaking mountain views.

Year-round entertainment…

If you stay at the All Suites aparthotel in Pau, there is always something going on no matter what the season. As well as the usual artistic programming of its concert halls, the commune is very dynamic and events are always being organised. Traditionally, January starts with the New Year’s Eve concert. The following month is the time for the Biarnès carnival, one of the five largest carnivals in France. In March, you’ll love the Résonance(s) festival with its original and quirky choreography. In April, a few miles away, the city of Billère transforms itself into the comic capital for 3 days. Back to Pau for May, when you can admire beautiful old cars and attend several grands prix. In June, Rendez-vous aux jardins invites you to discover the commune’s green spaces in a different way. In July, movies and music are in the spotlight with open-air cinema and more than 30 free concerts. August continues in this spirit with the Hestic’Oc Festival, during which a captivated audience is empassioned by world music. In September, the Foire de Pau fair is a must. October is for horse lovers. Every year, Pau plays host to the CCI horse trials, as well as the world carriage driving competition. If this isn’t for you, what about the Crime Fiction Festival to pique your curiosity and give you the jitters? Books and great minds are also on November’s agenda with Les idées mènent le monde. Literary meetings are held over a weekend to discuss social issues. Finally, in December, Pau puts on its finery for a busy Christmas month. A magical and dazzling month for everyone.

Things to see in and around Pau

About 25 miles from Pau is Navarrenx. This commune is proud to be Béarn’s only ‘Most Beautiful Village’ in France. Its ramparts are absolutely stunning. You can also visit the Betharram caves. Discovered in 1810, they provide a glimpse of the depths of the Pyrenees. Pau is also surrounded by lakes. Lakes Baudreix and Brion are perfect for bathing. You can also practice water sports there.

A unique visit not to be missed

While Pau celebrates Henri IV, few people know that the city is home to other royalty: Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte. Born in 1763 in the Hédas neighbourhood, he went on to become king of Sweden. Nowadays this part of the city can be visited without the need for a guide. Although renovation started in 2017, it still stands out for its bridges spanning a ravine, some of its little streets and its Passage Parentoy.
