The Citadel of Besançon, a piece of French history

An overview of this architectural work that won’t fail to inspire you!

Besançon Citadel, a renowned historic site

It was on 29 September 1668 that engineer Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban led the construction of a fortification, which would dominate the city of Besançon. After 25 years of work, the fortifications were completed in 1693, serving as a prison and lodgings for garrison troops. Besançon Citadel was born and became a real fort, which can still be admired today. It covers nearly 30 acres and offers panoramic views of Doubs.

Much later, in 1942, this military structure built under the reign of Louis XIV was listed as a French historical monument. In 2008, the site was also inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

This building has been open to the public since 1960 and now houses three “Musées de France”: the Musée Comtois, the Musée de la Résistance et de la Déportation and the Natural Museum and its zoological parks. Today, it is a tourist and cultural hub that welcomes more than 300,000 visitors per year.

Things to do in Besançon Citadel

Besançon Citadel is not just an architectural masterpiece. It is also an unmissable leisure destination for a trip to Doubs where there is plenty to discover.

There is nothing quite like a visit to the museum and its animal parks: the Zoological Garden, the Insectarium, the Aquarium and the Noctarium. The museum is a true haven of peace for creatures of all kinds: big cats (like the Asian Lion and the Siberian Tiger), primates, amphibians, insects (like stick insects and beetles), mammals (like the Visayan warty pigs), fish, and more.
The Citadel has two other museums for culture lovers. History enthusiasts can visit the Musée de la Résistance et de la Déportation (Resistance and Deportation Museum) to learn all about the Second World War. Opened in 1971, its itinerary is divided into twenty rooms. Lovers of local history need look no further than the Musée Comtois and its seventeen exhibition rooms. In particular, it houses an impressive collection of puppets.
