Paris campus: our accommodation and services

The Paris campus at a glance

Location and getting there

Paris has many universities and schools in the inner city, but also in its inner and outer suburbs. All of these campuses are easy to get to and are served by public transport: metro, bus or RER. Not only that, but the RATP network is undergoing a transformation for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, so many campuses will be quicker and easier to get to.

In Paris, the student population is confined to five arrondissements, the 5th, 6th, 10th, 13th and 16th arrondissements.

Campus history and development

The University of Paris has been around since 1200. Various lessons were given, in several faculties, a system that still exists today. In 1257, the famous Sorbonne University was founded, in the Latin quarter, in the 5th and 6th arrondissements of Paris.

The University of Paris was reorganised in 1896, then broken up in 1970 to create thirteen separate universities with different specialisms. As well as these universities, Paris also has the “Grandes Écoles”. These institutions, which specialise in certain fields, date from the 18th century and are separate from the University of Paris. These include the École Polytechnique and the École Normale Supérieure.

Student life in Paris

Culture, events, architecture, shopping centres and shops, two international airports and numerous train stations, Paris is also popular for its liveliness and dynamism. Studying in Paris or Ile-de-France means enjoying an exceptional environment and thousands of opportunities throughout the year.

Restaurants, cafés, shops and shopping centres

Students tend to live on a tight budget. And even if Paris has a reputation for being expensive, there are plenty of reasonably priced restaurants and bars! Paris is a city that never sleeps and there are so many establishments to choose from that there are some good deals to be had. You can get a meal in a cheap eatery for less than €20, for example, or enjoy happy hour drinks on the terrace with your friends!

As for shops, Paris deserves its reputation as the fashion capital. Clothes boutiques, shopping malls and vintage shops are everywhere. From the Westfield Forum des Halles to Rue de Rivoli, Boulevard Haussmann and Le Marais, you will find something to suit all tastes and budgets. Not far from Paris and easily accessible by public transport (metro or RER), factory shops sell off recent pieces at discount prices! This is also an opportunity to discover other arrondissements or towns. You’ll be surprised by what the city has to offer.

Sports facilities, clubs and activities

Whether you love sports, creative hobbies, art or music, there’s no shortage of things to do in the capital. You can even enjoy free classes organised by the city – yoga, hiking, gymnastics, painting or creative workshops – in addition to what your university may offer.

Paris is a city of museums. While art and history hold a prominent place – the Louvre, the Musée d’Orsay, the Centre Pompidou, the Rodin Museum and the Orangerie Museum – there are plenty of science and temporary exhibitions to discover, with something for everyone.

But Paris is also a city of shows and music. Concerts, one-man shows, theatre, musical comedy and amusement parks, your student status entitles you to many benefits and reduced rates to make the most of this cultural life.

The Parisian campuses also offer a rich and lively student life. Although university is above all a place of study and work, your timetable also allows you to take part in various sports activities or join clubs. Ask your university for more information and make the most of your academic year!
