Aparthotel for visiting the Château de Pau and the surrounding area

The famous Château de Pau

Built in the heart of the old town, directly opposite the Pyrenees, the unique Château de Pau and its secrets are popular with visitors. The walls of this emblematic monument bear witness to the city’s glorious past, as well as the birth of Henri IV, the future king of France and Navarre, on 13 December 1553. In addition, the “La Poule au Pot est Reine” festival is held every December in his honour.
The castle was founded in the Middle Ages to defend access to the Pyrenees and the viscounts of Béarn built the Mazères, Montauser and Billère towers. Gaston Fébus then built the 108-foot dungeon as well as the south wing of the castle and the Tour de la Monnaie. The castle became the seat of the kingdom of Navarre in 1512, before the birth of Henri IV. Restored by Louis-Philippe in the 19th century, the Château de Pau has been listed as a historic monument since 1840.
During your visit, discover the Salle des Cent Couverts, the formal dining hall, the King’s Room where Henri IV was born and where you can see the turtle shell that served as his cradle, the great staircase that Henri IV’s grandparents had engraved with their initials, countless tapestries, sculptures, paintings, and even Chinese vases.
Visits to the castle are by guided tour all year round. It is free on the first Sunday of every month. On public holidays (except Christmas, New Year and 1 May), the visit extends to the castle grounds.

The wonders of Pau

The city of Pau has many surprises in store for you during your stay. In the Belle Epoque, the influx of foreign tourists changed the face of the city, with the construction of palaces and villas, public baths, a casino, and even a funicular to get up to the castle. The Palais Beaumont and its magnificent English-style garden are home to one of the most beautiful historical convention centres in Europe, a casino and the Théâtre de Verdure venue where many events, such as the “L’Été à Pau” (Summer in Pau) festival, are held.
The capital of Béarn is also home to a Museum of Fine Arts and splendid collections of sculptures and paintings from the 15th to the 21st centuries, as well as the Bernadotte Museum, which recounts the life of the future King of Sweden and Norway.
The Boulevard des Pyrénées offers breathtaking views over more than 90 miles of the Pyrenees, as well as over the Gave de Pau and the Jurançon hills. All of these natural riches are protected under the “Horizons Palois” label, which prohibits construction or alteration of the landscape in any way.
