Located close to the towns of Mérignac and Bordeaux-Mérignac airport, the city of Bordeaux offers many tourist, leisure and sports activities. Things to do in and around Mérignac and Bordeaux
Discover Bordeaux and its surroundings
Its proximity to the coast and the presence of an international airport make the city of Bordeaux particularly appealing to businesses and tourists alike. The capital of Gironde is home to more than one treasure and it is a tourist destination of choice and a great place to live.
The Pey Berland Tower, Saint-André Cathedral and the Miroir d’Eau are just a few examples of the architectural heritage that, together with Port de la Lune, have led to Bordeaux being named as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. If you enjoy aimlessly wandering, you’ll love the Garonne quayside and the many parks and gardens, such as the Jardin Public. Culture lovers will appreciate the city’s cultural side and its many museums: Musée d’Aquitaine, the Museum of Contemporary Art and of course the Cité du Vin, a jewel of Bordeaux culture. And for something a bit different, the Darwin Ecosystem, located on the right bank is worth exploring.
Nearby you can discover many Châteaux, most of them containing Grands Crus, but also treasures of heritage. Saint-Emilion, for example, is not only a great name in wine, it is also a medieval estate perched on a limestone rock with dozens of underground tunnels. It is also listed as a UNESCO Heritage site, as are the Vauban de Blaye/Cussac-Fort-Médoc fortifications, a triptych standing on the Gironde estuary.
Ocean lovers can stroll around Arcachon Bay and the Dune of Pilat. This exceptional site offers a whole host of activities, from cycling in the forest, golf, fishing and oyster tasting to kitesurfing at the tip of Cap-Ferret.
The Bordeaux-Mérignac circuit
Construction of the modern airport began in 1935. It was from this airport that Charles de Gaulle flew to London in June 1940, on the eve of his famous speech on 18 June. After the war, it was rebuilt and opened in 1947, with a military part, a part reserved for Dassault Aviation and an airport. It is only since 1951 that it has been mainly used for civil aviation. Its control tower was redesigned by Philippe Starck and the Airbus 300, then the A310, naturally made it their home.
Near the airport, in the towns of Mérignac and Pessac, there are numerous tourist attractions including the zoo, the Château Pape Clément, the Pessac nautical stadium and the Bourgailh Ecosite. Take a wine tour and discover the wines of Bordeaux. Relax at Les Eaux Paradis, play a round of miniature golf in Mérignac or take the children to Royal Kids in Pessac. The two towns of Pessac and Mérignac have many restaurants where you can try the specialities of this rich and generous land: lamprey, duck breast with ceps, Arcachon oysters, Pauillac lamb, all washed down with a Bordeaux wine, preferably a Grand Cru.
